Missouri’s Newest Paranormal Hotspot Is a Haunted Asylum
If you ask the average ghost hunter where the most visited place for paranormal activity is, you'll probably hear the old Missouri State Penitentiary mentioned often. However, there's a new hotspot that's only been open for the past year or two that is causing investigators of the unknown to flock to it. It's an abandoned asylum that has a deep and twisted history.
I began going down this rabbit hole when I saw comments on Missouri urban legends that I shared on our social media places.
This was the comment that got our attention.
The location they're talking about is the old Emmaus Asylum now known as the Emmaus Village in Marthasville, Missouri. Missouri Preservation has details on the fascinating, but also disturbing history of the medical procedures and treatment of patients in this building. They say it was first born as a German Evangelical seminary in 1859, but in 1893, it changed. It became a place of treatment for people with epilepsy and developmental disabilities. It became a place where tragedy lurked including a major fire that destroyed part of the campus in 1930. Four patients lost their lives in that blaze. Now, the old abandoned Emmaus Village has become a very popular destination for those investigating the paranormal as some claim there are spirits that remain on those grounds.
It's important to note that the former caretakers do not seem to approve of their former buildings being used for ghost hunting. The current owners are preserving the history of the buildings, but that doesn't seem to calm the concerns of the Emmaus Homes which are now not affiliated with their former buildings.
No matter what your perspective is on the campus of abandoned buildings in Marthasville, Missouri, there's no questioning that paranormal investigators are lining up to see who (or what) remains inside. It is the new go-to place in Missouri if you consider yourself a ghostbuster. Just beware what you are likely really dealing with.
