Illinois Driver Services To Reopen Tuesday

After being closed again due to the pandemic, the Illinois Driver Services will reopen for the first time in weeks Tuesday, January 5.

If you need to renew your drivers license, get a license plate sticker, or take a test you will now be able to. Face masks must be worn at all times, and everyone is asked to practice social distancing to ensure everyone’s safety. Also, driver's licenses and ID card expiration dates have been extended through June 1, so that there’s not a rush and people getting into the facility to get what they need renewed.

According to cyberdriveillinois.com,

This June 1, 2021 extension also includes those who have February, March, April and May 2021 expiration dates. As a result, expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until June 1, 2021. CDL (Commercial Driver License) holders and commercial permit holders are excluded from this extension due to federal requirements.

Drivers can still renew licenses and vehicle registration online at cyberdriveillinois.com including:

• Renewing a license plate sticker
• Renewing a valid driver’s license for qualifying drivers
• Renewing a valid ID card for those age 22-64 (seniors 65 and older have free, non-expiring IDs)
• Obtaining a driver record abstract
• Filing Business Services documents, such as incorporations and annual reports
• Customers with issues involving administrative hearings may contact adminhearings@ilsos.gov.

Not everyone can renew online, if you are eligible you will receive a letter from the Secretary of State with a PIN number that is necessary in order to use the online method. . Those whose driver’s licenses or ID cards expired between Feb. 1, 2020 and Jan. 31, 2021, who qualify for online renewal should receive their PIN letter in December 2020 or January 2021. Those whose driver’s licenses or ID cards expire after Feb. 1, 2021, will receive their PIN letter approximately 90 days before their expiration date.

I renewed my registration online this past summer and it was such an easy process. A few days later my sticker was in the mail and I was set for another year.
