I went Black Friday shopping for the very first time last year. Not that I had never been to a store on Black Friday, but until last year I had never gone out at super weird hours; I'd always gone to see what was left over, after the craziness had wrapped up. Last year I decided to give some of the craziness a try.

Before last year, I had always said, "I'd rather pay full price than wait in those lines," but for whatever reason I decided that I had to experience Black Friday for real. It honestly wasn't the nightmare that I thought it might be, but I also didn't think it was all that great.

Several businesses have been catching some grief for starting their Black Friday specials late on Thanksgiving night. Some are even open all day, or most of the day, on Thanksgiving. There is a significant number of people that think being open for business during Thanksgiving is wrong. I'm a Libertarian on the issue. I think that individuals and individual businesses can make up their own minds on the issue, and choose to participate or not participate.

Last year, when I was giving Black Friday a whirl, we started shopping around 10 p.m. on Thursday night. This year, I think I'm going to sleep in. I'm glad I tried Black Friday out, but I'm not convinced it's for me.
