Black Friday Shopping Trends and Expectations
There is still time left before the holidays roll around to get all your gifts in order, but it's never too early to look at new gadgets and gizmos that will be on sale. Of course, the big shopping day is the day after Thankgiving – Black Friday. A day when people wake up before the sun rises and line up outside department stores to buy merchandise at steep discounts. This year, FatWallet has compiled a new survey that reveals shopping trends for the frantic day.
People showed a lot of optimism for deals this year. 40% of participants expect to save more money this year than last year. Better prices for consumers means more money for gifts. Four out of ten say they're shopping for someone else while two out of ten were honest and admitted they were really just shopping to satisfy themselves.
The data also shows how people prepare themselves for Black Friday. Nearly a quarter of people prefer to go in blind without doing any research beforehand. While a majority of those surveyed find out about deals from Black Friday newspaper ads.
Here are the most sought-after items:
- 42% want clothes (hopefully more stylish than Grandma's patented knitted sweater)
- 34% want consumer electronics like TVs and computers
- 30% want video games or action figures
As for the future of holiday shopping season, people still value Black Friday as the best day for deals over Cyber Monday and December sales. But over 40% of shoppers don't approve of Black Friday deals starting on Thanksgiving.
