This Illinois schoolhouse was built around 30 years before electricity was invented and 70 years before light bulbs were commonly used. Thanks to an explorer, we can see what remains of a one-room historic structure.

According to the information shared along with the video on YouTube, this is the Dickinson School in Kane County, Illinois. Using Hometown Locator, I was able to trace it to Carpentersville, Illinois. It's a small community that's a few miles west of Chicago.

The history of this school is sparse unfortunately. There are only a few facts I could nail down. #1. It was built in the 1850's using cobblestone and mortar. #2. It was a schoolhouse in the mid-to-late 1800's and eventually a police station until the early 1970's.

It's unfortunate a historical society couldn't have secured this building before vandals got ahold of it.

While the building is in severe disrepair, you can see that much of the wall material seems to be original wood. Surely there is someone or some organization that could clean this schoolhouse up and document the large amount of local history that took place within its walls.

As for now, it is what the video described: a forgotten schoolhouse that used to be the source of learning for Illinois kids over 160 years ago.
