Believe it or not, 19 states in America pay more for groceries than we do in Illinois.

As a grocery purchaser myself, I can tell you I was stunned, surprised, shocked, and dismayed.

People in other states pay more than we do for food.

It's hard to believe, but I always thought Illinois, the center of my universe, paid more for everything than everyone else.

I'm joking, but some people think that, and I'm sure this will be a massive wake-up call for those who think we're overpaying for groceries.

We spend less weekly on food at the supermarket than the national average.

Shockingly, 19 States Pay More For Groceries Than Illinois

Delish says, "The national average on groceries per week stands at $270.21, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, which have higher costs due to their geographic isolation and dependence on imports."

How much does Illinois spend on groceries a week? Delish says we're at $269.47, which, while outrageous, is still lower than the national average.

California, Nevada, and Mississippi are America's five most expensive grocery states, along with Alaska and Hawaii.

Our relative closeness to Wisconsin drives the outrage in Rockford because Delish says Wisconsin residents spend the lowest on groceries, at $221.46.

It may be time for Rockfordians to start cruising to Wisconsin for food.
