A veteran sky watcher in Missouri has just shared an unusual sighting from just a few nights ago. What began as a bright meteor streaking across the sky ended up being something else entirely with movements not consistent with a space rock.

It was a late night in Wright City, Missouri on July 7, 2025. A man who says he is a frequent night sky observer says that just after 11pm he saw what first looked like a bright meteor. He said that he was in a rural area not near any city lights. Here are some of his exact words from his testimony shared with the National UFO Reporting Center just days ago:

"I noticed a light in the distant western sky, moving at what appeared to be hypersonic speed. It initially appeared only as a light, resembling a distant aircraft. It moved far faster than any satellite...For about two seconds, it flared like a meteor or bolide entering the atmosphere, with fire or plasma visible around it, resembling an incoming space rock...Then its behavior became highly unusual. The object decelerated noticeably and came to a complete stop in the sky...As it slowed, it dimmed, and its apparent size decreased, as if gaining distance or dimming further. It faded into a barely visible, faint dot, resembling a dim star."

Here are some other unusual characteristics of what he says he witnessed. The object had an aura around it which he says changed color. The object left a trail behind like you would expect from a comet or meteor, but the movement he described doesn't match either of those possibilities.

If you're not familiar with where Wright City, Missouri is, it's located to the west of Wentzville which is nowhere near Whiteman Air Force Base. To his east is the St. Louis airport, but he says he saw the object to his west. By definition, he saw an unidentified flying object. What it actually was...well, the truth is up there somewhere.
