What is the World’s Rarest Cave Formation? It’s Only in Missouri
If you're a spelunker, you can travel the world, but you'll only find one specific cave formation and it's hidden inside a cavern in Missouri.
This is another example of a rare occurrence. It's me going to the Missouri sub-Reddit and finding something I didn't know. Full disclosure: there are lots of things I don't know, but most of the time Reddit isn't the source of them. It happened today though when I found a mention of the world's rarest cave formation. It's called the Wine Room.
Inside of Meramec Caverns, the Wine Room is a cave formation you won't see anywhere else. Wikipedia defines this fascinating formation of rock:
The Wine Room is home to the world's rarest cave formation, The Wine Table. The onyx table stands six feet high and is supported on three natural legs. Known as an aragonite formation, this structure was composed almost entirely underwater.
The layout of the how the rock forms this structure has not been duplicated anywhere in the world. It's completely unique geology in Missouri alone.
It's no secret that Missouri does not lack interesting caves. Many would argue that Meramec isn't even the best cave in the state, but it is one of the most accessible. Features like The Wine Room also make it a very worthy trip to see something you can't find anywhere else in the world.
