USGS: Missouri Hit by Hundreds of Quakes in 2025
As one year ends and another one is about to begin, the USGS has a roundup of all the New Madrid Fault quakes in Missouri for 2025 and they number in the hundreds.
In case you weren't aware, Missouri is one of the most seismically-active regions in America
This map shows all of the confirmed New Madrid Seismic Zone quakes in 2025 according to the database of the USGS. They number approximately 273 in total and those included some very curious tremors. There were fortunately no major New Madrid quakes this year with the largest being a mere 3.1 magnitude quake in September and another 3.1 quake in August. But, there was the odd June quake that happened just south of the St. Louis area. There was also the July quake just east of Lebanon which was in a non-typical spot. Bull Shoals Lake experienced at least 3 quakes in 2025.
If you take a 10,000 foot view of all the New Madrid quakes for 2025, this is the kind of year you want to have in an active earthquake zone. Lots and lots of minor quakes with no major events. It's worth noting that experts say these small quakes do relieve pressure along an earthquake fault, but not nearly enough to delay a major earthquake. That means even though Missouri had hundreds of tiny earthquakes near the New Madrid Fault, everyone in this region needs to remain earthquake aware as we get ready for a new year. Make sure you and your family have an emergency plan if the expected big one were ever to happen.
