Big Fish Die-off at Moberly, Missouri Lake — What You Should Know
There's been a major fish die-off at a Moberly lake confirmed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. There are important facts you need to know about what this means.
The Missouri Department of Conservation announced they were investigating a fish kill at Beuth Park Lake in Moberly on Monday
The state of Missouri shared an update today about what they discovered. They said that they now believe the fish die-off at Beuth Park Lake was a natural event and there is no danger moving forward. The Missouri Department of Conservation estimates that between 75 and 80% of fish kills are natural events. The other 20 to 25% are caused by pollution, chlorinated water or chemical spills. For the Moberly lake event, it was fortunately not any of those three possibilities. You might remember that this is the park that was first stocked with trout about 3 years ago.
The Missouri Department of Conservation says that fish kills like the one that just happened in Moberly are actually helpful to the ecosystem there as the decomposition will release nutrients that will benefit the other creatures that remain in the area. They encourage anyone that comes upon a waterway in Missouri with numerous dead fish that they report it to the state so the circumstances can be investigated.
