Mystery: 8 Hidden Tunnel Networks Rumored Beneath Missouri
As long as I can remember, there have been rumors of hidden tunnels under Missouri, but very little evidence. Now, there are new rumors mixed with old legends that hint what's under our feet in Missouri is more elaborate than any of us might have imagined.
Let's start with what we know. Yes, there are known tunnels under Missouri that are not secret. SubTropolis in the Kansas City area and the Springfield Underground immediately come to mind. These are public, but privately-owned storage areas utilized by companies that benefit from the cooler underground geography of Missouri. While these known tunnels are interesting on their own, I decided to dig deeper (no tunnel pun intended) to see what evidence I could find of tunnels we're not supposed to know about. So, I asked ChatGPT for some assistance. It came through like a champ. Here are some lesser-known secret tunnels in Missouri, many of which have been confirmed by explorers.
Lemp Mansion Tunnels - St. Louis, Missouri (Confirmed)
As these explorers discovered, there really were hidden tunnels underneath the old Lemp Mansion and Brewery. These areas were used to store barrels for the brewery for years not to mention some of the rumors of what these tunnels were used for in regard to the allegedly haunted Lemp Mansion.
Underground tunnels beneath Forest Park - St. Louis, Missouri (Confirmed)
Oddity Odysseys on YouTube were given permission to see the underground river and tunnels that really do exist beneath Forest Park in St. Louis.
Hidden rooms under Washington Street - St. Louis, Missouri (Confirmed)
Fox 2 in St. Louis shared a fascinating confirmation of the rumored glass-ceiling rooms that exist under Washington Street. A man fell through the street into one of them in 2017 and broke his back. His court case revealed numerous rooms under Washington Street in St. Louis, but the city doesn't want you to know about it for your own safety.
Anheuser-Busch hidden tunnel system - St. Louis, Missouri (Unconfirmed)
No confirmation, but locals in St. Louis speak of sealed-off rooms and deeper tunnels said to extend toward the Mississippi River.
Tunnels the University of Missouri Linking 3 different buildings (Unconfirmed)
I lived in Columbia for a period of time in the mid-1980's and have since heard of a rumored tunnel system linking Jesse Hall, Memorial Union, and the hospital complex. Some claim that secret societies still meet in these underground places, but others dismiss the rumors as unused steam tunnels if anything at all.
Hidden extensions connected to SubTropolis - Kansas City, Missouri (Rumored)
Many of my truck driving friends have delivered loads to the commercial areas of SubTropolis, but there are stories that there are off-limits government spaces that the public is not supposed to know about. The rumors claim that the feds store stockpiles of food and supplies for a future apocalyptic scenario. No one to my knowledge has been able to capture video proof of its existence - yet.
Political tunnels under Jefferson City, Missouri - (Partially Confirmed)
The Jefferson City News-Tribune reported in June of 2020 that a contractor working under the Cole County Courthouse discovered an underground tunnel. I've not seen any further investigations into what was found or what was connected, but it's easy to imagine that there would be classified tunnels under the state capitol for lawmakers in the event of a state and/or national emergency.
Cold War Tunnels Connecting St. Louis to Kansas City - (Unconfirmed)
This is the biggest theory I've heard shared over the years. Many believe a tunnel connects St. Louis, Columbia and Kansas City. The only real "evidence" are the maps like the ones above shared on X that reveal a nationwide secret tunnel system. This one remains an elusive mystery as no one has managed to get conclusive proof - yet.
