Many in Missouri used to road trip to an old-time general store in southern Iowa and soon there will be even more reason to do so as it's moving to a new location from the previous place it's been for nearly 40 years.

Due to the fact that I grew up in northeast Missouri and my wife is from southeast Iowa, I tend to learn about things happening in both places. My wife mentioned that her family that lives in Cantil had mentioned a famous old-time general store there was about to open in a new and much bigger place.

Dutchman's Store moved from Mount Sterling, Iowa to the Main Street location in Cantril, Iowa in 1985 according to their official website. On September 20, they'll be moving to this fancy new building.

The new building is at 14999 Hwy 2, Cantril, Iowa. They plan to close the original Main Street location September 18 and September 19 to allow time for the move. September 20 will be the grand opening day for the new place.

If you're not familiar with where Cantril, Iowa is at, it's only a couple of miles from the Missouri border making it an easy trip from anyplace in northeast Missouri.

Why is it called Dutchman's Store? The website says "The Zimmerman family coming from Lancaster County PA , speaks a German dialect called “Pennsylvania Dutch” So to Clair & Virginia it only seemed right to call the store “Dutchman’s Store”.

I don't recall if it was Dutchman's, but my parents used to love road-tripping from northeast Missouri to old-time general stores like this one and I doubt they're alone. Looks like those old-time general store fans will have a new larger option.
