Safe to say that 2026 has already been a challenging year for many places in Missouri, but there's new data that reveals that things are worse in 10 cities and towns more than anyplace else.

Now that we're several months into 2026 already, I decided to search out the numbers for three very important factors in Missouri including crime, poverty and the unemployment rate. According to the database query from ChatGPT, there are 5 Missouri places that are the worst in the state. Before I share the results, there are some important things to remember. Several of the 10 worst cities in these categories in Missouri are actually seeing improvements. It's also key to understand that many of these communities are facing problems that are out of their control. That being said, here are the 5 worst Missouri places so far in 2026:

1 - Berkeley - most dangerous city in the state with a 34% poverty rate

2 - Vinita Park - 2nd most dangerous city with sky-high burglary and murder rates

3 - St. Louis - well known for having among the highest crime rates in America

4 - Kansas City - crime rate is now 194% above the national ranking

5 - Jennings - 2nd lowest median income in Missouri - high poverty, limited job growth

6 - Caruthersville - Lowest median income in Missouri

7 - Bonne Terre - Low income, high poverty and a weak job market

8 - Poplar Bluff - 23% poverty with historically low incomes, but crime rate improving

9 - Rolla - 23.8% poverty rate, crime rate is 37% above national average

10 - Ellington - 33.5% unemployment coupled with very low income and housing values

I was surprised at several towns appearing in this list as I know that several have very strong and proud communities. As I stated before, there are improving crime trends even in many parts of the St. Louis area so this list is not without hope. However, the challenges are real for those trying to make a life in these Missouri places.
