
Multiple Reports Rank Illinois Prisons Among the Worst
Prison isn't meant to be sunshine and lollipops, but they are meant to be safe for those incarcerated there. There are multiple sources that rank several Illinois prisons among the very worst in America.
When most of us think of Illinois prisons, the old one in Joliet comes to mind thanks to The Blues Brothers

Since I prefer to not draw a conclusion from just one source, I decided to query several resources online to see where current Illinois prisons rank. I was surprised to see one infamous Illinois prison come up in 3 different rankings as one of the worst in America. Money Inc, Freedom for All Americans and Prison Law Firm all include the United States Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois as one of the most dangerous. It has housed many celebrity criminals like John Gotti and Pete Rose. It has been the prison home for some of the most violent criminals in America including militants, mobsters and spies. At one time in the 1980's, USP in Marion replaced Alcatraz as the place to house the worst of the worst. Now, it's a medium security facility.
United States Penitentiary in Marion is not the only Illinois prison ranked among the worst in the country
The Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois has become known for excessive force by guards according to The Marshall Project. Excessive numbers of homicides have been reported within their walls. Both Prison Law Firm and Freedom for All Americans list it as one of the nation's most lethal for those held there.
