It's a turbulent time in the transportation industry and that includes companies serving public school systems. A student transportation company in Illinois is now a part of that disturbance as they've just notified the state of a mass layoff of their workers.

It's another day and another WARN notice posted on the Illinois Work Net Center website. It says that First Student, Inc in Tolono, Illinois is laying off 28 in what they describe as a "mass layoff" in their posting.

There's no confirmation, but you'd have to imagine this is connected to the contract loss that caused 200 workers from First Student, Inc in the St. Louis area to be laid off a few days ago. The notice given to the state of Illinois says these new layoffs will be effective beginning on June 30, 2025. In the case of the St. Louis layoff of student transportation workers, it was due to a transition to a new provider. That is likely the case for the Tolono, Illinois layoffs also.
