The complete list of GameStop closures includes hundreds of new locations in 2026. While the closures in Illinois are sudden, it's not completely unexpected. Video gaming has gone from CD's, DVD's and cartridges to world of digital downloads where trips to stores are less necessary for new game releases. I would argue that used game sales are still something many families count on which won't be possible if the brick and mortar GameStop stores are gone. Gaming companies would probably love to eliminate used game sales since they don't make any money on games that have already been sold and most probably figure that used game sales reduce the number of new games sold. Still, I hope the remaining GameStop stores can find a successful way forward. This would be a sad development for families who are trying to keep entertainment affordable.
