FBI Sting in St. Louis Reveals Wicked Gold Scam in Missouri
Do villains ever sleep? That seems hard to believe as there's a new gold scam in Missouri that's been revealed as a sting operation by the FBI revealed.
There was a bulletin from the FBI earlier this year about scammers using couriers to retrieve precious metals from victims. Now, according to a report shared recently by Yahoo News, this warning has become a reality in Missouri. It appears this is based on a report from KTVI in St. Louis. It says there were two incidents in St. Louis County where the FBI intercepted the scammer before they were able to complete the theft.
How does this gold scam work and what's happened in Missouri specifically?
The FBI bulletin says the perpetrators will say contact a potential victim claiming they are an official with the government, a bank or a tech company. They'll say that their bank account has been compromised and they need to convert their money to a precious metal such as gold. They will then send a courier to pick up the gold which they say they will transport to a secure location while their bank account is recovered.
The FBI says this scam is especially sinister as the villains will give the person they're targeting a passcode so that they will only give the precious metals to someone who provides the correct code to give a pretense of security when their intention is to rob them of as many funds as the victim is willing to convert into gold.
The Yahoo News report says the victims targeted in St. Louis County were elderly. They advise that families alert their older family members of this scam before it's too late.
