Why Springfield Was Chosen for the Inaugural Season
The Women's Pro Baseball League officially opened its first season this weekend, with every team competing in Springfield. Fans packed the stadium to cheer on the players as history was made. After nearly two years of building the league, assembling teams, and recruiting talented athletes, the long-awaited first pitch was finally thrown.
While the league currently features just a handful of teams and a relatively short season that wraps up in early September, every great league has to start somewhere. Hopefully, the Women's Pro Baseball League will continue to grow year after year, much like the WNBA has over the past several decades.

A Look at the History of Women's Professional Baseball
This isn't the first professional women's baseball league in history. In fact, it's the fifth. One of the highlights of opening weekend was the appearance of 99-year-old Maybelle Blair, a former pitcher in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, who helped inspire a new generation of athletes.
For its inaugural season, the league consists of four teams representing Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. League officials hope to expand by adding more teams in the coming years as interest in women's professional baseball continues to grow.

Why This League Means So Much to Young Athletes
As the mom of an athlete who dreams of playing professional sports, this league is especially meaningful to me. My daughter plays three sports, and seeing women compete professionally in baseball reminds her that opportunities continue to grow for female athletes. It's inspiring to tell her that women can pursue the same dreams as men and that professional teams are looking for talented players just like her. If she keeps working hard, continues to train, and never gives up, who knows? One day, it could be her name being announced on the field as a professional baseball player.
