Missouri’s Oldest Attraction Once Home to Notorious Inmates
"Choose Your Fate." Those are the first words you see when logging onto the Missouri State Penitentiary website.
Known as the oldest operating place west of the Mississippi River, The Missouri State Penitentiary Prison once housed the nation's worst, most notorious people, from Sonny Liston and James Earl Ray.
Missouri State Penitentiary
Located in Jefferson City, Missouri, the prison, which is used for tours and ghost hunts, still stands and is now the oldest attraction in Missouri.
The prison was in use for 168 years, decommissioned in 2004, and sits on 47 acres of land that residents say is haunted by the spirits of all the inmates who once called this historical site home.
You can choose from a 2-hour history tour (which is totally in my wheelhouse) or a 2-hour ghost tour (which is not in my wheelhouse). This place is one of the most interesting places for paranormal teams to investigate.
Even the show Ghost Adventures toured this site with unquestionable evidence of the hauntings inside.
Oh, if these walls could talk. I'm sure even with the history tour you get a sense that you are being followed and watched. I did watch the Ghost Adventures episode and I was freaked out, I can't even imagine what that experience is like. However, like they say on the website "Choose Your Fate," enter if you dare.
