Deer Crashes Are on the Rise in Missouri

Deer crashes are on the rise this time of year due to both mating season and deer hunting season, and drivers in Missouri are being urged to stay alert on the roads.

If you do happen to hit a deer, can you legally keep it? Well… yes and no.

Legal Steps After Hitting a Deer

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the state does have a law in place for this situation. If you strike and kill a deer with your vehicle, you must follow a specific process before you can keep it. Written authorization to possess the deer must be granted by a Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) agent. The Wildlife Disposition Form is free, but you must contact the MDC to obtain it.

Now, if you’re wondering where the deer goes while you wait for that process to be completed—honestly, I’m not sure… and maybe that’s one of those things we don’t really want to know.

Safety Tips for Missouri Drivers

MoDOT also offers a few reminders for staying safe on Missouri roads during this time of increased deer activity:

  • Always wear your seatbelt.

  • Control your speed and stay alert.

  • Don’t swerve to avoid a deer.

  • Remember, deer rarely travel alone—if you see one, there are likely more nearby.

  • Don’t follow vehicles too closely.

Driving on a Missouri road recently, I was well aware of how many deer were out there. Even at night, I swear I saw at least 15—and I’m sure there were more I couldn’t see in the dark.
