Chicago Gears Up for Iconic Green River St. Patty’s Tradition
If St. Patrick's Day is your jam, then you know Chicago is the place to be to celebrate the greenest day of the year.
On March 15th, the city will be busier than ever as the Chicago River is dyed emerald green, kicking off one of the biggest St. Paddy's Day celebrations in the country.
Chicago River Dying Details
Starting at 10 a.m., the best spots to catch the Chicago River turning green are the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Chicago Riverwalk, State Street, Columbus Drive, and bridges along the river. The eco-friendly dyeing kicks off right at 10 a.m., so be sure to grab your spot early.
Why does Chicago dye the River?
The tradition is part of the city's celebrations of its Irish Heritage. Not only is there the river dyeing, but a massive parade, and numerous Irish-Themed events throughout the city.

It might be too late to book your trip for this year's celebration. I made the mistake of going on a St. Patrick's Weekend a few years back and it was a madhouse, but seeing the river green is something you just have to see in person at least once. You don't realize how green the river is until you see it up close and personal.
Fair warning, just be prepared for crowds, and lots of intoxicated people.
