They were larger-than-life icons in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. But, they were also Black men living in, to say the least, a turbulent time.

What would a conversation between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X have sounded like?

Such a conversation never took place, but Bluff City Theater's final production of 2021, entitled The Meeting, imagines how such a visit might have gone.

Speaking on TalkBack on KHMO, Director Taneal Williams told us the two men did meet briefly in 1963 in Washington, D.C., but an extended visit never happened.

"This (play) takes place in Harlem. What's really cool about it is this isn't a look at Martin and Malcolm as legendary figures of the civil rights movement," Williams said. "It's a look at them as Black men, as humans and the struggles to uphold the movement and the sacrifice that takes place to stand up for what's right."

The Meeting is part of Bluff City Theater's Second-Sight Theater project, designed to produce African-American stories by African-American creators.

Tonight (Thursday) is preview night for The Meeting. Performance time at the theater is 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee Saturday, as well.

Then, next week, the production moves to Hannibal High School for a series of performances for students in the high school and middle school.

Admission to the public performances this week are free, but you need to go to bluffcitytheater.com to let them know you're coming.
