A thunderstorm packing winds estimated in excess of 60 miles per hour rolled through Quincy around 6:20 Monday evening.

Ameren indicates over 17,000 customers lost power around Quincy. Crews are working to restore service.

Quincy Mayor Kyle Moore declared a state of emergency at 7:30 p.m. Dozens of streets in Quincy are blocked by downed tree limbs. Downed power and cable lines and downed or broken utility poles present hazards in many areas of town. Debris from buildings was common in streets in the downtown area.

City officials are discouraging unnecessary travel. Uprooted trees damaged gas lines in the 15th and Maine area. In Taylor, Palmyra and other fire department in that area were also called out for a gas leak related to the storm.
