The state fire marshal has been called in to find the cause of a blaze that damaged three buildings Wednesday afternoon in downtown New London.

There were no injuries. The fire started in a vacant building on Main Street and spread to two adjacent structures. One was unoccupied. The other housed three apartments and the Ralls County Service Center of the North East Community Action Corporation. Residents of the two occupied apartments and NECAC personnel were able to evacuate safely.

New London Assistant Fire Chief Marshall Miller said the cause had not been determined Wednesday afternoon, but that the building where the fire started had no utilities or roof. In addition to New London, firefighters came from Hannibal, Hannibal Rural and Center.

NECAC plans to see Ralls County clients at its service center in Hannibal until a decision is made about the New London facility.
